Robert Evans will be one of our featured speakers at our 2018 Carolina Photo Expo at the Sheraton Imperial in Durham, NC August 3-6, 2018.
A: Hey Robert, it is great to have you join us today.
R: Thank you for having me.
A: Where are you based out of?
R: I currently live in Minneapolis, but I travel a lot. I moved here from Los Angeles 3 years ago. I wanted a slower life, better place for my kids and to be able to fish before I go to my studio. I work half the time here and travel the other half
A: You will be speaking about wedding photography at the 2018 Carolina Photo Expo. How are you able to find those clients that can see the difference in your wedding work?
R: Well I think it kind of mutual, I do market to a high-end clientele, however, I have always said: " I photograph the people I should be working with." Meaning they gravitate to me as well.
A: Great advice, show what you want to photograph more of. I see a lot of high profile names in your client list, how do you think you were able to reach that market?
R: I attribute some to my work, just being different and then knowing they can trust me. It didn't happen overnight. I waded through the muck over the years, slowly raised my prices each year and continued to shoot from the heart and what I wanted, not what I thought the client wanted me to shoot. I think it's very important to shoot for yourself. Yes, I listened to my clients' needs but I made sure I shot for myself too.
Also, I created time and space to allow time to play on the wedding day, which is what I will talk about in August. I ask photographers, DO you shoot what you want, or do you shoot what you get? I teach them how to shoot what they want.
A: That is excellent advice. I feel the same way about shooting for yourself and taking the time to do so. Do you think that this ideology has contributed to your longevity in the business?
R: Definitely, You have to stand out. Your work needs to move people and grab their attention. The other thing I will talk about to keeping your images simple. I truly believe less is more. The Power of Simple is what I call it.
